Tanuj Chopra, director
Tanuj’s first feature film PUNCHING AT THE SUN is about South Asian teenagers coming of age in post-9/11 Elmhurst, Queens. The film premiered at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival while he was in film school. The super 16mm film was shot entirely with teenagers he mentored while working with non-profit organizations in Harlem and Queens. Variety called the fiery debut “A display of talents that’s distinctive, original and iconoclastic,” while the Sundance film festival said Punching at the Sun “sheds a light on an American perspective rarely reflected on screen and glistens with the freshness and vital energy of a new directorial voice.” Punching went on to play at over 30 festivals around the world including the Tribeca Film Festival as well as the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival where it won the grand jury award. The film was also a finalist for the prestigious writing award, The Humanitas Prize. Tanuj wrote, directed and produced the award winning movie.
